Who’s Your Boss?
It’s Lonely at the Top. Many business owners experience a sense of isolation at some time in their careers, which is a natural consequence of being at the top of the tree. Even if you’re a transformational and charismatic leader who’s built a great team, you’re still the boss. With few exceptions, this means people will speak to you with that in mind. They may even alter the message to something they think you want to hear.
What are the Consequences? Business owners tell me there are two common consequences of isolation. First, they feel they can’t share ideas with their staff, perhaps because to reveal a particular plan would raise a lot of questions, or promote uncertainty among their team. Second, being the boss can rob you of accountability because you only have to answer to the voice in your head. This voice will go gently on you, often letting you get away with things. This slows progress and can lead to habitual procrastination.
That’s Where a Coach Can Help. A coach can address both of those consequences head on to help you move forward. As a sounding board, your coach will listen to your ideas with complete confidentiality and examine your plans and motives to help you to uncover a range of options. When it comes to accountability, a good coach will raise your awareness of the situation at hand and make you responsible for identifying and implementing the solutions. Against a set of agreed plans and milestones, your coach will keep you on track, helping you to focus and eliminate distractions.
Show Strength, Not Weakness. So, if you feel that sense of isolation and the lack of accountability is seriously holding you back, a coach can make all the difference. Remember, getting a coach is not a cry for help or a sign of weakness; it actually shows great strength. All of your favourite sports stars have a coach. That personal trainer you signed up with at the gym? She’s your fitness coach. Having a coach in your business could really help you to grow.
